The Way Home

we are the ONLy continuous stay homeless shelter in kitsap county.

Our location on 6th Street has been closed by the City of Bremerton. Covid-19 blessed us with the opportunity to operate out of the Kitsap Pavilion. While this is a temporary solution it has taught us how we need to better serve our homeless community. We now need to transition to a new space for our new vision!

This is the full story!

We’ve changed. We thought we had a good model for serving the vulnerable but we were shown a better way. And we love it! Operating a 24-hour shelter has changed us, changed what we do, and changed what we believe is possible. I could never imagine a year and a half ago when we were faced with having to shut down our shelter of 26, that one year later we would be operating a 24 hour, 7 day a week facility for 80. And, we just added a new pod (sleeping 6) this week bringing our capacity to provide safety, shelter, food and stability to 86 people every night.

Sixty more people who would have had no place to go a year ago – now have this wonderful place to stay while we help them find their way home.

Covid-19 brought us lessons and blessings.

What’s Next?

We’ve learned there is no going back. Covid like pandemics are likely here to stay and the spacing rules for congregant living won’t change once there’s a vaccine. All our plans for what we would do through our 6th Street building have changed and we couldn’t be happier. We have a vision for the future and for those who feel hopeless and forgotten. We believe in their future and we need people like you to partner with us financially, through volunteering, and dreaming along side us! The following is what we need as a community:

  • We need a new shelter with space for 75 people to be safe and stable while seeking permanent housing as well as space to provide services on site.
  • We need a place with a commercial kitchen that can provide three meals a day in addition to job training.
  • We need a place large enough to accommodate twice the number of employees who are required to serve these people who need safety, security and a place to rest from the relentless vigilance that homelessness requires.
  • We need YOU to partner with us to build this new vision!

Kory’s Story

The downtown areas of Bremerton are overpopulated with homeless people. And a lot of those homeless people don’t want to be clean and sober. But a lot of us here are clean, like me, I have over three months now clean and sober. And it is it’s kind of stressful sometimes.

Amanda’s Story

Since I’ve been here, I’ve been able to have a place where I can be warm. I’ve met a lot of really nice people and there’s a lot of really good resources. It helps to have a place to go. They help us get out of here too, get back on our feet, on our own.
